Born on 24 March 1965, Mark William Calaway is better known by his ring name The Undertaker. Mark is an American retired professional wrestler and is generally regarded as one of the best professional wrestlers of all time.
Calaway spent the bulk of his career wrestling for WWF/E. He is best known for his critically acclaimed “Deadman” Undertaker stunt and was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2022 for this. Calaway remains employed for WWE via a 15-year contract signed in 2019.
Early Career
Calaway started his career in 1987 and worked under various gimmicks for World Class Championship Wrestling (WCCW) as well as other affiliate promotions. The Undertaker became USWA Unified World Heavyweight Champion and WCWA Texas Heavyweight Champion during this period of time.
After signing up with World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in 1989, Mark had a very brief stint in the mid-card as “Mean” Mark Callous before he joined the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, which is now called the WWE) in 1990.
1990 – 1996
First up, Calaway was meant to debut as The Gobbledy Gooker however these plans were scrapped. In the Survivor Series, he made his debut at The Undertaker. This persona spent the first year winning matches through defeating jobbers as well as enhancement talent. At WrestleMania VII, Calloway defeated Jimmy Snuka.
Twelve months subsequent to his debut, The Undertaker bagged the WWF Championship by defeating Hulk Hogan. However, he lost the title back to Hogan in less than a week. After a couple of weeks, The Undertaker turned out to be a fan favourite when he started feuding with Jake Roberts. At WrestleMania VIII, The Undertaker declared victory over Roberts. At WrestleMania IX, Giant Gonzalez was his next victim.
In 1993, the Undertaker started with Yokozuna, where they exchanged victories over each other. After the feud, Taker took some time off in order to allow a back injury to heal. In 1994, Ted DiBiase created a fake Undertaker at WrestleMania X. Over the coming couple of months, both Taker’s feuded but the real Undertaker won. After the feud, Taker spent the next year being involved in a feud with Yokozuna and The Million Dollar Corporation.
At WrestleMania XI, Taker defeated King Kong Bundy. In 1996, Diesel cost Taker the WWF Championship during his match with Bret Hart. At WrestleMania XII, Taker defeated Diesel. After Mania, Taker began feuding with Mankind. At SummerSlam, Mankind beat Taker in the first-ever boiler room match. After Bearer’s betrayal, Taker beat Mankind at In Your House.
Personal Life
The Undertaker has been married three times. In 1989 he married Jodi Lynn. The couple had a son in 1993 but got divorced in 1999.
His second marriage was a year later in 2000 when he wed Sara. As a wedding gift to Sara, Mark had her name tattooed on his throat. The couple had two daughters prior to going their separate ways and eventually filing for a divorce in 2007.
Mark was married to ex wrestler Michelle McCool in 2010 and Michelle gave birth to the couple’s first child in 2012.
