Pro wrestling is among the most exciting sports in the world today, packed with memorable moments, incredibly talented wrestlers, and enough action to keep fans at the edge of their seats. There’s always something interesting going on in the world of pro wrestling, and over the years, a number of fascinating facts have popped up regarding both the players as well as the matches.
Without much more ado, let’s take a look at some of the more interesting facts about the professional wrestling scene.
The World Wildlife Fund
For a long time, there was a lot of confusion surrounding the name of the WWF. On one hand, it stood for the World Wildlife Fund, but at the time, it also stood for the World Wrestling Foundation. It caused enough of an issue that the two companies would eventually agree to find a solution, and ultimately Titan Sports ceased making use of the “WWF”, removing it from all official announcements and other media.
This proved to be successful until 2000, when Titan Sports began using the acronym again, and were taken to court by the World Wildlife Fund. The courts ruled in favour of the latter, and Titan Sports were forced to change the name to WWE, or World Wrestling Entertainment.
Chyna
Most wrestling fans know Chyna, but they might not know that there was a time when the pro wrestler was pursuing a different path. In fact, Joanie Lauer had actually wanted to become an agent for the secret service.
She had spent some years in Spain, and had learnt to speak a number of languages, including Spanish, English, French, and German. She had initially hoped to use her skills with language to become a part of either the DEA or the FBI, and that she had also attempted to become a Secret Service agent. She would eventually decide to abandon that idea once she had learnt that women were not allowed to guard the president.
Most Decorated Wrestler
There have been a lot of fantastic wrestlers over the last few decades, so it might be surprising to learn that Raven holds the record for being the most decorated wrestler in the WWE, holding more titles than anyone else, a feat that is confirmed by the WWE.
There are some caveats here, however, as the titles are all from companies that WWE controls the rights to, including the ECW and the WCW. Currently Raven’s total title count sits at 32, more than any other professional WWE wrestler.
Largest Wrestling Event
We like to think that the USA is the home of the biggest wrestling events, but the largest event of all time actually took place in the country of North Korea, a strict place where one can’t even enjoy playing NZ online roulette or any other pastimes. It was called Collision in Korea and was held in the capital city of Pyongyang. It’s estimated that around 300,000 people from across North Korea attended the event, although it’s also speculated that the majority of them were forced by the government to be in attendance.
